Our Involvement Within Our Communities
Shelter Foundation Scholarship
Each year, the Shelter Insurance Foundation awards a wide variety of scholarships to students throughout our operating region. Shelter's largest program is the Scholarship Program for Agents, which is funded by agents and the Shelter Foundation and offered to graduating high school seniors in the agent's local community. The Shelter Foundation also sponsors a scholarship program for children of Shelter employees and agents.
Other scholarships that the Foundation continues to provide annually are:
- B.M. Seaman Scholarships – Two graduates of La Plata High School are each awarded a $2,000 scholarship.
- Multicultural Achievement Committee (MAC) Scholars – A $2,000 scholarship is awarded to one CPS high school graduate who is an active member of the MAC Scholars program.
- Lang Award - A $500 scholarship is awarded to an outstanding vocational education graduate of Missouri School for the Deaf in Fulton, Missouri.
- Success Grants – Up to three renewable scholarships are awarded to selected high school seniors, payable at $1,000 per year for four years as long as the students maintain academic requirements.
Shelter is proud to help further the education of these hard-working, deserving students each year.
Columbia Public Schools Partners in Education Program - West Middle School
The Columbia Public School District's Partners in Education program provides an opportunity for schools and our community to come together and through a mutual sharing of resources, strengthen our schools’ programs, and enhance our community's economic growth.
The Partners in Education (PIE) program officially began in the fall of 1984 with eleven partnerships. Today, the program has more than 130 partnerships and 100 partnership friends. Since its inception, Partners In Education has drawn upon the vitality and enthusiasm of each participant. The program does not look for financial support for schools; rather it enriches educational programs by tapping the human resources available in the community.
Our partnership with West Junior, now West Middle School, was one of the original partnerships in the program.
Each year, Shelter Insurance® participates in a community-wide effort in Columbia to raise money for the Heart of Missouri United Way. The campaign is held in October each year and gives employees several different ways to contribute. Many local charities benefit from our efforts.
Welcome Home – Veterans
In 2015, Shelter donated $450,000 to Welcome Home, Inc., a veterans assistance organization located in Columbia, Missouri. The donation was to help them make improvements to a shelter for veterans so it will be ADA-compliant and able to accommodate more veterans.
Show-Me STATE GAMES
Shelter is one of the original sponsors of the largest state games in the nation: the Show-Me State Games. The Show-Me State Games is an Olympic-style sports festival offering more than 40 events for all ages and ability levels.
In 2014, the Games celebrated 30 years. Coordinators continue to focus their efforts to promote health, fitness, family, and fun. Shelter is proud to have brought back the Shelter Insurance® Show-Me State Games Torch Run in an effort to generate exposure and enthusiasm for the Games throughout Missouri.
Ronald McDonald House
Making a meal at the Ronald McDonald House is quickly becoming a tradition among many teams and departments at Shelter's home office throughout the year. It's a rewarding way to help families who have children who are in the Women's and Children's Hospital for an extended amount of time.
Food Banks in Our Operating Territories
Each month, different departments within Shelter's home office in Columbia, Missouri volunteer at The Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri. In addition, our many of our field offices and agencies donate time or hold food drives for their local food banks in an effort to reduce hunger in their communities.
